The imbalance of the redox status mediated by folate deficiency or methionine load has been characterized by various indices of oxidation such as increases in end-products of lipid oxidation (conjugated dienes, hydroperoxides, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), changes in the fatty acid composition with decreased polyunsaturated fatty acids (mostly n-3 fatty acids), and a lower antioxidant defense, as demonstrated using the free radical-mediated erythrocyte hemolysis test described in Durand and Blache (1996) and in Prost (1992)
